Monitoring a web site and your Internet Access

Traceroute allows a user to follow a packet through the network to a specific destination. It shows the domain, IP address, and the roundtrip packet times as it traces the route to the destination. This show the network efficiency.

If your web site is down, it will show by a timeout in the traceroute.

Ping can be used to show whether or not a device with a valid internet address or domain name can return packets sent to it by a specified server.

Frequently ping is disabled by ISP's to prevent DOS - Denial of Service. This is a sign of a good ISP, if you cannot ping your web site.

To test whether you can get out to the internet, you can ping Yahoo (Yahoo is still open to ping):
